Consumer Issues in Your Community
NG2000 Consumer News and Referral Center | 1008 Tenth Street, PMB #456, Sacramento, CA 95814-3502 | (916) 221-4593

Why Get Involved With Consumer Issues?

Believe it or not, consumer issues aren't always about product recalls, class-action suits, or boycotts. In fact, learning more about the different facets of consumer issues in your own community actually opens a huge window of opportunity.

And there's probably no better way to expose yourself to opportunities than to volunteer in consumer-related organizations. Volunteering in a consumer group or club will give you
  1. first hand knowledge of new products hitting the market,
  2. new opportunities to interact with these products, and of course
  3. direct contact with new businesses and leads for even earlier data.
The Importance of Community

Regardless of what your personal affiliation is, or what your motivations are, working with your community will help you accomplish your goals faster. Manufacturers pay attention to numbers. So if you align yourself with consumer groups that have a large membership, you'll increase your chance of getting heard.

This is a form of networking except that it's a little more 'hands-on' - it's a little more 'involved' because you're right there in the midst of things, you're actively participating with others involved with consumer issues, and as a group, you have more influence on the end result of things.

Finding Community Consumer Groups

To get involved with consumer groups in your own community, start by attending town meetings and community functions. You'll be amazed at the opportunities that are right there in your own neighborhood. Some of these opportunities come from other volunteers, elected officials, government employees, and even private companies.

Additional resources include libraries, museums, and historical buildings - all of which not only add to your choice of support, they also help you understand your role as a conscientious, tax-paying consumer. You can also find out more by visiting the County and City Governments in your neck of the woods, or by interacting with the agencies listed the NG2000 Consumer's Address Book.

The NG2000 Consumer's address book is a MSAccess database directory of over 200 consumer oriented agencies, both public and private, and of all sizes and types. In addition to names, addresses and telephone numbers, this address book provides the email addresses, website URLs, and the functions of each agency listed within.

From the NG2000 Consumer's Address Book, you can browse or search for an agency to help you resolve a consumer-related issue that you're having. Speak directly with an agency's representative by clicking the database's dialer. Communicate with an agency's spokesperson online through email. Visit an agency's website for more information and keep a record of your interactions with each agency listed within
